Dental Implants

Dental Implants can be an excellent way to replace missing teeth and provide a fixed solution for removable partial or complete dentures. A relatively recent development, single teeth implants have become very popular as a permanent solution to tooth loss. A dental implant can be appropriate for both a single missing tooth, or multiple teeth and can act to support a variety of dental appliances. Having performed for years, dental implant procedures for our patients throughout Cherry Hill, you’ll find that Zonies Holgado Dental Associates has the experience and expertise you need in an implant dentist.

What Are Dental Implants?

A Diagram of a Dental ImplantDental Implants are small titanium fixtures that replace the natural root of a tooth and act as a foundation for a replacement tooth, dental bridge or denture. Placed in the area where the original tooth existed, the dental implant integrates with your bone providing a bond that is often much stronger than that your natural root. Once a tooth implant is placed, it can then be used as a secure point to which a dental appliance can be attached.

Implant Dentistry: Solving Problems

Dental implants are a good solution for anyone that’s missing one or more teeth and who’s looking for a permanent, natural feeling solution. Typically once tooth loss has occurred there are both functional and cosmetic challenges that teeth implants can be used to overcome:

Difficulty Chewing – Understandably, missing one or more teeth can cause difficulty chewing and eating. As a permanent repair, dental implants will perform just like your natural teeth.

Appearance – Once teeth have been lost, your appearance can be dramatically affected. Not only will there be a void in your smile, but the absence of the teeth may cause bone loss in your jaw, as well as shifting teeth. Use of a tooth implant can restore your smile and prevent bone deterioration.

Loose Dentures – Frequently the poor fit of many dentures is due to a dependence on teeth that have been weakened due to periodontal disease. Therefore dental implants are often used in combination with a tooth extraction to create a much more secure fit for dentures. The result is a much more comfortable denture that won’t require constant attention.

Tooth Implant Basics

A tooth implant is designed to replace a single tooth and consists of three parts:

  • The Titanium Implant
  • The Abutment
  • The Dental Crown

The dental implant procedure consists of several basic steps. First, the titanium implant is placed in the jawbone. Over time this will integrate into your natural bone to provide a very secure foundation. The abutment fits over the portion of the implant that protrudes from the gum line and the crown is the replacement tooth that we create and then fit over the abutment to create a natural appearance.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure can take anywhere from a single visit to several visits over the course of several months, depending on your dental health, the number of teeth involved and which teeth are replaced. Starting with an initial examination, we carefully assess the condition of your teeth and determine the best treatment options for you. This normally includes x-rays, a Cone Beam CT, and the creation of molds of your jaw to evaluate the amount of bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. After discussing the options with you, the basic steps of the dental implant procedure include: surgical placement of implant, installation of the abutment and finally the fitting of the dental crown on top of the abutment. Once the process is completed, you’ll find that the appearance and function of your teeth will be dramatically improved. In fact, many of our Cherry Hill area patients have wondered out loud “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

While most people are good candidates for a dental implant procedure, a successful result is more likely for those with adequate bone density and in good general health. Since bone density isn’t common knowledge, we encourage you to Contact Us so that we can assess your ability to successfully receive an implant.

Teeth Implants: Alternative Uses

Teeth Implants, also known as dental implants, have become increasingly popular over recent years. A permanent solution, teeth implants offer a wide range of benefits over available alternatives. Some of these benefits include:

Dental Implants vs. Conventional Dentures

Many patients that have had conventional dentures and have opted to replace them with a dental implant have seen a dramatic improvement in their lifestyle. Overall, patients report that the implants have eliminated their daily frustrations and discomfort of ill-fitting dentures. Since dental implants are permanent, patients avoid embarrassing social situations caused when dentures slip and can enjoy a healthy and varied diet without the restrictions many denture wearers face. On the other hand, implants require undergoing a minor surgical procedure that incurs a significant cost. Furthermore, diligent oral hygiene and proper care are required to maintain teeth implants.

Dental Implant vs. Fixed Bridge

A fixed dental bridge has been the traditional option for many patients that have lost a tooth, however it’s not always the best option. While a fixed bridge can be more cost effective, there are a number of drawbacks compared to a dental implant such as the need to remove material from otherwise healthy teeth, a greater likelihood of dental decay around the bridge and the fact that fixed dental bridges can wear out and need replacement. Tooth implants are a permanent solution and with proper dental care can last a lifetime.

Dental Implant vs. Removable Partial Denture

When missing several teeth a partial denture can be a good option for many, but as with any treatment there are benefits and drawbacks. Generally, a partial denture is among the most economical options and doesn’t require the short term discomfort associated with the procedure required by dental implants. However, it can be more uncomfortable, inconvenient and can contribute to the weakness in supporting teeth as well as the jaw. For those that seek a more active lifestyle that doesn’t require constant attention to maintaining the denture, teeth implants may be a better option.
